Thoracic back pain – Various Causes Revealed
Thoracic back is the portion of upper back in a person’s body. It refers to the area between the neck portion and the lumbar back or the lower back. The vertebrae or the ribs are attached to the thoracic back. It is that part of the spine which is corresponding with the chest portion. This part of the back is strong enough to bear all the burden and strain in order to protect the upper part of the body. It is not so common to have thoracic back pain in comparison to the pain at the lower back. However, if one is suffering from the thoracic back pain, it is no less torturing as is in many spinal disorders that are becoming common nowadays.
The upper or thoracic part of the body is usually strong. It is the portion of the body which enables a person to stand erect. It also provides security to the internal organs of the chest. Mostly this part of the body has restricted movements and hence it is less prone to deterioration. Low deterioration means less of damage and injury. The neck part and the lumbar portion or the lower back is very much active and this is the reason why it is very much prone to injury and mutilation. A person can suffer from spinal disorders that are common lower back problems. Some of the disorders are spinal instability, disease of degenerative disc, spinal stenosis or herniated disc.
It is important to know the causes of thoracic back pain. The causes will also reveal the extent of injury that a person is suffering. Normally, the thoracic back pain is caused due to muscle irritation, strain, any abnormalities or dysfunction of the joints. Any trauma suffered by a person can also be the cause of thoracic back pain. The cause for thoracic back pain can also be as simple as an incorrect posture of sitting. If the same posture is continued for a longer period of time then a person can suffer from this pain. This becomes evident with the start of neck pain or shoulder pain and sometimes even both.
The other reason for thoracic back pain is the irritation in the muscles. This is caused usually because of the repetitive movements of the same muscles. When the same set of muscles is over strained, it causes back pain. This generally happens in those muscles which connect shoulder girdle with the shoulder blade and thoracic rib cage bag. Lack of strength and deformation in these areas can also cause this pain. This generally happens in sports and accident injuries.
The thoracic pain can also become chronic in some cases. But the gravity of the injury can vary. The pain, whether minor or major, affects the normal day to day life of the person. They have to restrict themselves from doing certain things like jogging, dancing, running, playing volleyball or basketball etc.
